It’s been a fairly quiet summer with not a ton of thunderstorms and it looks like Labor Day weekend will be rather quiet in Reno but rather stormy in Florida. The Atlantic is rather warm right now and is ripe for tropical systems to strengthen.
As of Thursday evening the National Hurricane Center shows Dorian moving north before moving west on Friday and making landfall along the east coast of Florida around Sunday evening. This is what the majority of the models are showing for the location of landfall, but the strength of the storm is a little bit more uncertain. It’s possible the storm could make landfall as a major hurricane with winds close to 130 miles per hour. Rain and storm surge will also be a concern with this storm. Localized areas could see over 10 inches of rain by the time the storm passes. Keep in mind we are still a couple days out and the forecast could change both in intensity and path.
Closer to home the weekend will be very summer like with highs in the mid 90’s and plenty of sunshine. It will be breezy in the afternoon with gusts in the 20’s, but nothing really out of ordinary through Saturday. As a front moves through the Pacific Northwest Sunday into Monday, our winds will also get stronger. Fire danger will be elevated Sunday into Monday as a result, with gusts near 30 miles per hour. Next chance for thunderstorms comes next Wednesday.
