Adventure Day Returns To The Sparks Marina For Those With Disabilities

This weekend at the Sparks Marina, there is a special opportunity for people with disabilities to explore adventure sports that they often times do not get the chance to try.

Mark Wellman's Adventure Day at the Sparks Marina is Sunday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will provide adaptive equipment for people with disabilities to try, hand-cycling, sailing, kayaking, and even rock climbing.

“If you're a wheelchair user, you can still climb on this rock. I think a lot of people that use wheelchairs don't realize that they can rock climb,” said Mark Wellman, two-time Paralympian and event organizer.

Sierra Nevada Community Sailing will be on-site with adaptive boats, and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra will bring adaptive cycling equipment to the Sparks Marina. There will also be single and double kayaks with professionals in the field to help guide participants. Wellman provides the rock climbing wall and a harness he invented for those in wheelchairs to be able to climb.

All ages and abilities are encouraged to come out and try something new at Adventure Day. Close-toed shoes are required. There will be an information packet for participants, parents or guardians to complete when they arrive at the Sparks Marina.
