Official: Santa Anita Cancels Racing After 21 Horse Deaths

A horse was euthanized Wednesday at Santa Anita Park in Southern California bringing the total number of horse deaths there this year to nine.

The track said MC Hamster, a four-year-old horse, fractured its left front ankle during training on the main track.

The park said the horse was taken for a diagnostic exam, where it was determined to be an unrecoverable injury.

The horse was euthanized on the recommendation of the veterinarian.

The park closed live racing late last month in accordance with the LA County health order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Horse deaths at the track gained nationwide attention last year, when officials briefly suspended racing after more than 20 racehorses died in 10 weeks.

A task force investigated and found no animal cruelty or criminal activity.
