Authorities Urge Caution While Driving in Winter Conditions

It can get slippery on area roads, but even if it looks normal, Nevada Highway Troopers are reminding you to be extra careful, especially on black ice that you may not see.

"You're not jerking the wheel. You're not slamming on your brakes. You're not taking corners or curves a little bit too fast because if you are on black ice, on that part of the roadway, you tend to slide across the travel lane and maybe into someone else's travel lane, which can cause a bad accident out there,” says Trooper Dave Gibson.

Trooper Gibson says it can form anywhere, like the mountains or even in places like northwest Reno in the morning hours.

With that said, officials are urging everyone to take their time on the road because you never know when you'll drive over some black ice.

Another thing to consider is cruise control. Troopers say to keep it off while you're driving in wintry conditions, whether you're going over black ice or slush.

"You lost traction and those tires continue to spin and once they do finally hit some pavement, something where they can catch grip, your car can get thrown into another lane just because the cruise control being set."
