When recovering from a serious accident or dealing with a chronic condition, finding much-needed medical equipment can be overwhelming and expensive. Care Chest of Sierra Nevada provides these resources for free.
Today, we got a behind-the-scenes look at the services they offer and got to meet a few of their clients.
In the warehouse, Diane Pruitt shows us some of the supplies she uses from Care Chest, "Being in a wheel chair, you don't realize is above your arm reach, you can't get to - so need to have one of these grabbers."
Eight months ago, Pruitt 's world turned upside down when a serious spinal infection left her paralyzed. Then, Care Chest came alongside her and as a partner in recovery.
"They helped me just realize that life wasn't over, that you can get up and go" says Pruitt.
Wheelchairs, walkers and crutches are provided free of charge to low-income Nevadans, but that's only a small part of what Care Chest offers. "Some items you don't think about. We have a shelf full of adult incontinence supplies, we have portable commodes,’ says Peter Stanton, the Development Director of Care Chest.
Christopher Pecson has been a client for a little more than a year and is grateful for all the supplies he’s been offered, from the big stuff to the little, "Some hygiene equipment is necessary to be sterile and clean and everything."
Pecson worked in construction and had never heard of Care Chest, until a few years ago. "I had a motorcycle accident, it was actually pretty fatal, but thank you to Renown for resuscitating me."
Most of Care Chest's clients are between the ages of 30 and 65.
"You're working, you get hurt or you get sick, you lose your job, you lose your insurance and there's nowhere to turn. Care Chest is here to help people in that situation", explains Stanton.
If a client is able to return durable medical equipment, like shower chairs and wheelchairs, the company can sanitize and re-use it. Last year, with just a small warehouse and staff, Care Chest was able to help more than 11,000 northern Nevadans.
"I just feel like there's no way I could've come this far without them,” says Pruitt.
Care Chest of Sierra Nevada is a local non-profit and reliant on donations. A fundraiser is being held this Friday at Wingfield Park in Reno. It's called “Bacon, Bourbon and Brews” - and there will be plenty of all three of those things for the price of admission.
