"Got a feelin' 'bout the headline, I smells me a headline, papes are gonna sell like we was givin' them away,” sings a group of talented actors who represent a gang of homeless kids selling newspapers on the streets of New York in the late 1800’s. You might recognize the popular lyrics in the beloved Disney Broadway musical “Newsies.”
The non-stop stage production is steeped in history and debuting in Northern Nevada this weekend. It is about the plight of child laborers who create a union to fight for their rights. "This is a true story. It happened back in 1899,” explains Wild Horse Children’s Theater Executive Director, Carol Scott. “These are a group of kids that were part of a David and Goliath story and it's a story of hope..."
The Newsboy Strike of 1899 changed the course of history, when young workers targeted one of the biggest newspapers after publishing giant, Joseph Pulitzer raised the price of papers at the kids' expense.
Fast forward a dozen decades and the young, local performers are making sure the fight of those underprivileged children is not forgotten - through a physically demanding show. "When you see this production, you will see how tight they are with their tap and their dancing. It is just astounding."
The group has been rehearsing for months in Carson City at the Brewery Arts Center.
"This is our biggest show to date as far as artistically and technically." From vocals to extra tap lesson, choreographed set changes and even scaling scaffolding, the musical theater actors do this story of victory justice highlighting the past while showcasing the future. “When you leave this theater you will know that our kids are the future and on the right track."
