Family Dog Reunited After Car Crash in Susanville

A family dog is nearly reunited after being separated from her family after a car crash near Susanville, CA.

On July 30th Jennifer Porter and her family were in a rollover crash. Luckily for them the family walked away without serious injuries. Their dog however, Liberty, jumped out of their car window and ran up the highway.

The Cal Fire Grasshopper station were the first on the scene and after making sure everyone was safe, they helped the family look for Liberty but did not find her. The family contacted campgrounds, shelters and started handing out flyers in an effort to find Liberty. The family had to return back to their home in Washington without Liberty in hopes someone would find her.

On August 3rd Mrs. Porter tells us her son received a call from Captain Gary Robinson of Cal Fire, they had found Liberty. The problem now was finding a way to reunite Liberty with her family.

Cal Fire Grasshopper station saved the day and arranged a pilot to fly from the Bay Area to Susanville, pick up Liberty, then fly to Portland Oregon to meet with Porters husband.

“So many things happened in such a short period of time, that our heads are still spinning. I was air lifted from the accident scene to Reno; my husband and son were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Susanville. We realized we could have easily died, but we were all in one piece. We were separated, but would be together again in a couple of days. We lost was our dear pet, but we were hopeful and rewarded. We want to make sure that all of the people who contributed to our well being and finding our Liberty are publicly thanked. These people are heroes in every way.” Porter told Channel 2 News.

The family would like to thank the crew of Cal Fire Grasshopper station, the Susanville Animal Shelter, Swap talk radio hosts and listeners, Ranger Margaret and of course Alex the pilot that took the time to fly Liberty back to her family.
