A Fernley Intermediate School teacher is being recognized nationally by the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for her outstanding contribution to the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.Â
The PAEMST award is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf on the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Mrs. Arvella Jergensen is 1 of 213 teachers across the country to receive this award.Â
As an awardee, she will receive a citation signed by President Obama and a $10,000 award from NSF. She will also travel to Washington, D.C. with her husband and son, Doug and Tanner, for an awards banquet, professional development opportunities, and the opportunity to participate in discussions with policy makers on mathematics and science education in the classroom.
"I am very honored and humbled to receive this award. I am blessed to work with a fantastic principal, a super district office, and the best team of teachers ever. A special thanks to Lucy Gillet for nominating me. I represent a team effort from Lyon County of so many people that have supported me and made me who I am over the years. I just want to say thank you to everyone. Lyon County is doing great things for kids every day. I’m so proud to say that I’m a part of it."
