Food insecurity is a growing issue on school campuses, the University of Nevada- Reno found that 21%of their students struggle with getting enough food to eat.
That's why the University has a food pantry, Pack Provisions, to help out students and staff in need. In just two years the total number of individuals who use pack provisions has grown from 78...to almost 400. By partnering with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Pack Provisions is able to help provide for all students and facility, "We are here for everyone, that means maybe you deal with food insecurities all semester or maybe you are just having a few bad weeks we are here to help people no matter how big or small their problem might be," says Stephan Page, a volunteer with Pack Provisions.Â
Studies show that food insecurity often affect an individuals GPA, which can stop someone from wanting to continue their education. It's not just food that Pack Provision provides, they also have hygiene products and clothes as well as school supplies. The organization wants to make sure that all their students and staff get the help they need in order to stay in school, "Budgeting for food or groceries is actually the last thing they can get money for, they have books and tuition and for us we are here to help them out," says Ma Krissa Mendaros with Pack Provision.Â
Pack Provision is located on the third floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union.Â
