The Biggest Little Dog Park opened in July. Geared towards downtown Reno pet owners, it's been popular with the four-legged crowd.
"Once there was a couple down there when it was snowing so hard you could hardly see and they must have been down there four hours with their dogs," said Sherron Elledge of the Biggest Little Dog Park Coalition. "People are just loving it."
The first phase got a boost from a fundraising campaign where pet owners could pay to put their furry children on one of the park's murals. Now that the basics are in place, they're raising money to add more amenities.
"Those will include silhouettes on the fence, wind shelters, additional benches and an arch that goes over the main gate," Elledge said. "Also, some fire hydrants and an artistic bike rack shaped like a wiener dog."
A new campaign will auction off dog-shaped silhouettes to the highest bidder. They'll be custom engraved for the winners.
"Those will be placed on the fence of the dog park; there will be 25 total," Elledge said.
The nearby Urban Market is also contributing to the cause with a program they're calling "roundUMup."
"The purpose is to invite our guests to round up each purpose to the next dollar," said Denise Barcomb of Urban Market. "All those dollars will be tracked and at the end of June we will total that and the Urban Market will match that total and make another donation to the dog park."
That promotion runs through June.
"We're in a dog friendly building," Barcomb said. "We have a dog treat jar on the counter and we think this is a nice way to give back."
