Gov. John Kasich Announces He's Suspending His Bid for President

Ohio Governor John Kasich has announced that he's suspending his bid for president. He made the announcement official on Wednesday afternoon in Columbus.

On Tuesday night, Texas Senator Ted Cruz dropped out of the Republican presidential race after losing in the Indiana primary to Donald Trump.

With Kasich's announcement, Trump is now the presumptive GOP nominee for president.

Though armed with an extensive resume in politics, the second-term Ohio governor struggled to connect with Republican primary voters in a year dominated by anti-establishment frustration. Kasich was a more moderate candidate who embraced elements of President Obama's health care overhaul and called for an optimistic and proactive Republican agenda.

The Republican competition changed dramatically with Trump's Indiana victory and Cruz's abrupt decision to quit the race. Trump won the Indiana contest with 53.3% of the vote, to Cruz's 36.6% and Ohio Gov. John Kasich's 7.6%, according to unofficial results.

Despite his lengthy political background, Kasich struggled to connect with Republican primary voters in a year dominated by anti-establishment frustration. He failed to convert a win in his home state primary into momentum in the chaotic GOP campaign.

On Facebook, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval released the following statement:

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Gov. Kasich and believe he would have been a great President. Now that he has dropped out of the race, I plan to vote for the presumptive nominee although it is no secret that we do not agree on every issue. Elections are about making choices and the Democratic nominee is simply not an option.
