Halloween Spending is On the Rise This Season

We're just a couple of weeks away from Halloween and spending is on the rise. A new study this year found people will spend $11.3 billion to get into the Halloween spirit. We got a peak at what's popular this season.

The ghouls are out, costumes are in, decorations are up and so is the number of people spending money. “My daughter wants to be a princess and then by son, probably Batman,” said Erika Drummond.

This year it's hard not to pass up some of the new favorites. “We already had all of our Anna (from Frozen) costumes sold out. We've been having to call different stores just to see if they have some in stock,” said Luci Clark of Halloween Spirit.

Stores like Savers, also anticipate which costumes may be a big hit, based on how movies do at the box office. “You can always look to the popular movies. So with the explosion of Frozen, every little girl that comes in looking to be Elsa or Anna," said Christopher Thompson.

Ninja Turtles and superhero costumes are most popular among boys and Game of Thrones costumes are also flying off the racks for adults. Store supervisors say local events are helping contribute to a boost in sales. “We have so many events, especially this year with the Zombie Crawl and the Thriller Under the Arch and Fright Fest that everybody wants to get in on it,” said Thompson.

The average household is expected to spend around $124 on candy, costumes and decorations this year.

Stores like Halloween Spirit and Savers will be open through Halloween. If you want to get stocked up on stuff for next year, supplies will start going on sale November 1st.
