The Reno Fire Department is warning people in the area of an increase of bursting pipe cases this winter.
It’s not just the fire department staying busy with these messes though, water extraction companies are busy helping to clean the flooding too.
Often times when a pipe bursts from frozen conditions, it can be hundreds or thousands of gallons of water that's leaked.
A water extraction company like Servpro, says first they find the source of the flooding, then remove the water with vacuums and dry the affected area with large fans.
Once the drying process is complete, they move into cleaning and restoring any damages caused by the flood.
This winter, Servpro has been receiving dozens of busted pipe calls so they want to remind folks how to avoid the situation altogether.
Patrick Henry, a Servpro project manager, says once the temperatures outside reach freezing, it's always a good idea to keep the temperature inside your home at least 55 degrees or more.
"Keep kitchen cabinets open where the plumbing is underneath your sink, vanity cabinets just to allow some warm air to get into contact with the plumbing," says Henry.
But he says the biggest reason to be cautious is because flooding damages can be both dangerous and very expensive.
“Sometimes we see houses with seven to eight breaks on different lines so it can be pretty costly just to fix the plumbing, let alone the damage incurred by the actual water itself," says Henry.
