L.A. County Coroner Confirms Chester Bennington Died by Hanging

The Los Angeles County coroner confirmed Friday that Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington died by hanging.

Coroner's office spokesman Ed Winter says the 41-year-old rocker hanged himself from a bedroom door in his home near Los Angeles.

Bennington was found dead Thursday.

Winter says a half-empty bottle of alcohol was found in the room, but no drugs were evident. Bennington struggled with drug and alcohol addictions at various times during his life.

A suicide note was not found.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled.

Bennington was one of two lead vocalists for Linkin Park, who became one of the most commercially successful acts of the 2000s. They won countless awards, including Grammys, and their hits include "In the End," ''What I've Done" and "Numb."

Phoenix native Bennington joined Linkin Park in 1999, and the group quickly rose to fame with hits like "Crawling," "In the End" and "Faint." The band's debut album, 2000's "Hybrid Theory," was certified diamond by the Recording Academy, meaning it sold more than 10 million copies in the United States.

With the Grammy-winning band, Bennington sold millions of albums with a unique mix of rock, metal and rap. In 2004, the band collaborated with Jay-Z on the EP "Collision Course."

Bennington was a close friend of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who committed suicide earlier this year. Thursday would have been Cornell's 53rd birthday.

Bennington is survived by his wife, Talinda, and six children from two different marriages.

The Linkin Park concert, scheduled for Friday night, Sept. 1, at the Harveys Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena has been canceled.

The following is a statement from Linkin Park’s management:

“We are incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Chester Bennington. The Linkin Park One More Light North American Tour has been canceled and refunds are available at point of purchase. Our thoughts go out to all those affected.”
