Money Watch Q & A: Solar Power Savings

Nevada lawmakers are vetting a bill addressing a fight between rooftop solar companies and NV Energy.

The Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee reviewed SB374 on Wednesday. The bill passed the Senate, but it's the first time the measure's most controversial portions got a public hearing.

Advocates for rooftop solar installations have been protesting against a 3 percent state cap on how many solar customers can sell energy back to utility companies. They say the state will reach the cap this year, and the solar industry could come to a standstill.

NV Energy says the sell-back practice, known as net metering, could benefit solar users at the expense of traditional customers.

The bill allows the Nevada Public Utilities Commission to set a tariff for solar customers once the cap is reached.
