Local Food Pantry Opens Doors

On Monday, one local woman's dream came true when she was finally able to open the doors to her food pantry.

Cindy Becher opened the St. Francis of Assisi food pantry at 1 p.m. on Hubbard Way in Reno.

Guests are able to choose a set number of items from things like canned food, breads, veggies, meats and other household goods.

“Rather than sending them a whole thing of peanut butter or a whole thing of tuna fish when they might have that already in their pantry and so I kind of just wanted to make it open for them as a grocery setting," says Becher.

Becher says none of this could have happened without help from volunteers and donations from places like the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

For guests like Larry Torrez, it was Cindy that they couldn't thank enough.

“She's very nice and considerate, by the looks of things from me going through there, they're very well organized and the quality of stuff that people can pick up to help their needs out," says Torrez.

The St. Francis of Assisi food pantry is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and the third Wednesday of each month from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
