A dog was killed Monday night in Fallon after a coyote attack. The owners rushed it to Sierra Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center off of Wells Avenue in Reno, but it later died.
Sierra Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center says they see one-to-three coyote attacks a week this time of year. Situations like what happened in Fallon can be avoided by keeping dogs on a leashes.
"I think if they would have had the pet on a leash it would not have sustained as severe of injuries as it did," said veterinarian Kimberly Hayes adding, "Coyotes can be very bold."
Dr. Hayes says pet owners should not leave their small pets alone outside especially during dawn and dusk hours. You want to remove all attractants such as pet food, bird seed, and garbage.
Most importantly, when walking your pets, always keep them leashed because snakebites are also an issue in Northern Nevada.
"Allowing a dog to roam in a rural area off leash is definitely more dangerous and liable to attract and attack."
