The Virginia Street Project is giving Midtown Reno a whole different look. But not everyone is happy with all the changes. Some people are upset that a bus stop has been moved from South of Virginia Street and Thoma Street to a location further North in front of the Carriage Stone Senior Apartments.
Buses run 24 hours a day along this route, and one resident tells me she's concerned about more than just the noise. The partially blind woman who asked us not to use her name, took a trip down memory lane on Monday. She's went to the spot where she used to take the bus, but things have changed. "Three quarters of my vision is gone. I have just a tiny spot that I see the whole world through out of my right eye. I have no peripheral vision and my right eye is gone," she said.
Her deteriorating vision isn't why she remembers this bus stop. It's because the stop has been relocated in front of her apartment building. One would think it would make her life easier, but it's not. "I had to move to get away from the cigarette smoke from riders waiting for the bus and the potential bus fumes. They want to move the bus there. My health cannot afford that. I already lost a relative. My dad passed away from lung cancer and I have a brother who's battling lung cancer," she said.
RTC says buses will not idle there long term. Many are electric and eventually the whole fleet will be Eco-friendly by 2035. She says, however, her health can't wait. She's moved to another apartment on the other side of the building. Not an easy task by herself and barely being able to see. "I have made over 150 trips to the new floor," she said.
The RTC says they also moved the stop for safety reasons. The previous location is between 2 crosswalks. Usually bus stops are placed on the far side of crosswalks to allow people to see clearly when crossing the street. They're usually a quarter mile apart as well. The move accomplishes that as well. For the vision impaired lady however, she has a different type of plea for safety. "We're senior citizens. The city should be protecting the senior citizens," she said.
RTC says the new bus stop will not be active until the project is completed in August.
