NDOW Captures Black Bear in Douglas County; Thursday Release Scheduled

Early Wednesday morning the Nevada Department of Wildlife caught a male black bear in Jack's Valley in Douglas County as it was breaking into a barn where a calf was recently born.

He's between 5 and 7 years old and about 350 pounds and has never been captured before.

Biologists say they want to train bears from stay away from cattle. They say they're now seeing conflicts between humans and bears on a year-round basis.

Along with being tagged and tattooed, the bear was fitted with a collar for a new study to examine bear migration and how they're interacting with mountain lions. "We've noticed in previous research that a pretty high proportion of mountain lion kills in some of those mountain ranges are being taken over or scavenged by black bears,” says NDOW biologist Carl Lackey.

The bear will be released back into the wild near where it was captured on Thursday morning.

The best advice if you do encounter a bear, is to call the Nevada Department of Wildlife at (775) 688-BEAR.
