"We just got a very large donation of dog food from a donor who is requesting that we use it not only to help the pets in our shelter right now, but also the pets in our community that are struggling right now," said Marketing Director Nicole Theodoulou. "So we're very excited to share it with those in need this weekend. This is absolutely need-based, no questions asked. if you or anyone you know is struggling to feed your pet, we want to be able to help."

It's being held at the Reno shelter from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17.

"All you need to do is show up, there will be signs pointing you to the back area, when you get to the front of the line, pop your trunk and our volunteers will fill it up with pet food for you," Theodoulou said.

This donation is mostly dog food, but there's a limited supply of cat food and toys as well. Nevada Humane Society also has a pet food assistance program that pet owners in need can sign up for.

"We want to do everything we can to help support community members keeping their pets, and we know how incredibly difficult it is to give a pet up when you're no longer able to care for that animal," Theodoulou said. "So anything we can do to help keep community members and their pets together, we're here to help."

For those able to donate right now, the shelter is in need of cat food and wet kitten food, as well as candy donations for their upcoming Halloween trunk or treat event.

"We rely on donations to make sure the event goes for the full two hours on Halloween," Theodoulou said. "You can make a monetary donation online and we have donation bins outside both shelters."
