New Building Project Takes Shape in Downtown Carson City

If you've been to Carson City lately you've probably noticed there is a lot of construction going on. Including building a new complex in downtown. The Hop and Mae Adams Foundation held a ground breaking ceremony for the new complex Wednesday morning. It's the start of something new.

"All cities are going more and more to mixed-use," said trustee Steve Neighbors.

Meaning you can do a variety of different things in one spot. This is another way for the city to be pedestrian friendly.

"Where people can intermingle with each other and I think that is what the goal of mixed-use development is too," said Mayor Bob Crowell.

The community is playing a vital role in the design and Mayor Bob Crowell is excited for what the new complex will bring to the city.

"We want to make sure we're keeping up with the times but we want to make sure that we're not losing our history that made us who we are today," said Crowell.

You can get a feel for what the complex will look like by the different boards hung up on the outside of the construction zone. The building will have three different sections. The top will have room for eight apartments, the middle will be used for office space, and the bottom will be used for retail. The leftover basement will be used for storage.

"The community 9-1 picked the present design so it was an overwhelming decision to go with the existing look," said Neighbors.

The original plan was to just remodel the building and have it ready in 2016.

"We found that we just couldn't make it safe," said Neighbors.

Which means they had to start from scratch and tear it down. So while the way of going about the new complex changed, the foundation remains the same. Revitalizing the city and giving it a sense of community. They still don't know what they will do with the leftover bricks, but one idea is to use them in the new building. But they are not for sure yet.Â
