When firefighters need to move water quickly during an emergency, every part of the supply line matters. A new donation to fire departments across Northern Nevada is bringing crews a tool designed to make one part of that job faster and easier.
Northern NV Now, formerly known as EDAWN, will donate Cedar Valves to fire departments across the region, including the City of Reno, Storey County, Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.
The donation will take place on Friday, Sept. 25, at the Regional Public Safety Training Center, 5190 Spectrum Blvd. in Reno.
The Cedar Valve is a quick-release valve for a supply line. It allows a firefighter to disconnect a charged line without shutting down the hydrant or waiting for pressure to drop.
Before the equipment goes into service, crews from each department will see the Cedar Valve demonstrated and have time to ask questions and practice using it.
The equipment is being provided to departments that cover a mix of urban, suburban, and wildland-urban interface areas and frequently work across jurisdictional lines or support one another.
Northern NV Now said reducing the time crews spend connecting and disconnecting supply lines directly relates to firefighter safety and how quickly water reaches a fire.
The donation is part of Northern NV Now's work connecting companies developing new technology with the people who can use it, while supporting public safety infrastructure in the communities it serves.
