New Veterans Memorial Planned for Sparks

Now that the first phase of the Southeast Connector Project is finished, a local group is making plans to turn the new intersection into something special: a memorial for Nevada Veterans.

The Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza will be located at the intersection of Greg Street and Veterans Parkway in Sparks. Plans feature the names of 838 fallen service men and women since Nevada became a state in 1864. The rendering also includes 17 trees, to represent Nevada's 17 counties, benches for each branch of the service, symbolic sculptures, and lots of little details unique to the Silver State.

At the project's announcement event today, planners said this is the best possible use of the space.

"It's important to me," Sparks City Councilmember Ron Smith said, "and I'm sure to a lot of people, that we honor the veterans that have given the ultimate sacrifice to our country."

"We all get really busy, but if we don't stop and remember those who helped us get where we are at, I think we lose a lot," 39 North group member Kristopher Dahir said. "So this is just so important."

In order to make this happen, the group needs some help. The project is completely privately funded, and they are looking for donations, sponsors, and volunteers.
