For the first time this year, the Sparks Marina is stocked with thousands of fish, much to the delight of some local fisherman. Sam Sedillo, a Fisheries Biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) says they do it to get people outdoors and having fun.

Stocking fish provides an easy way to get people the opportunity to go out and have the chance at catching a rainbow trout, brown trout, tiger trout, catfish," said Sedillo. "And we really like doing it for the community because it gets people outside."

It's been getting at least one fisherman outside for nearly 70 years. Jim Guichu says he looks forward to the first stock because in the past it's helped him hook some really great fish.

"I've got some nice fish out of here. I've got 26, 27-inch catfish. 23, 24-inch trout," said Guichu. "I got some big fish in here over the years."

Before anyone puts their pole in the water, Sedillo says they must get a fishing license. The fees associated with the licensing actually go right back into stocking the marina, because it pays for raising the fish at the hatchery, and funds other wildlife projects throughout the state.

Other bodies of water stocked in our area include Paradise Pond, Davis Creek ponds, as well as places like Virginia Lake, Wilson's Common ponds, and a variety of other areas outside of the nearby area.
