The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest scouting and youth organizations in the United States.

On Saturday, a group of scouts tested to earn their rifle shooting merit badge.

There are over two thousand scouts in the Nevada Area Council and there were about twenty kids who earned their rifle shooting merit badge Saturday, both boys and girls.

This merit badge teaches gun safety, hunting laws, and wilderness preservation for children interested in the sport of shooting and hunting.

Merit Badge Counselor, Ron Miranda, said, "With the scouts we have them do an about an hour and a half safety on proper use and techniques of the rifle and loading and unloading and the commands from the range to make sure that everybody is following all the safety commands, so no one gets hurt."

The scouts lost their shooting range in a fire in 2021.

With the help of Nevada Firearms Academy, they are still able to practice and earn their badges at the regional shooting facility in Reno.

All the scouts were very responsible around the firearms and the scouts said that they find these tools very valuable.

A scout named Maddison said, "It's very helpful in life. It's like stuff you're going to be able to use in life and it's just really fun to do like instead of sitting at home. It's just really fun."
