University Science Museums offering free admission on April 25

Last year's Day at the Museum event was so popular, the science museums are opening for another day of free science exploration this spring.

If you have been meaning to stop by some of the University of Nevada, Reno’s museums, this weekend may be your chance.

On Saturday, April 25, three campus museums will open their doors for a free community event called Spring into Science, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event includes Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, the W. M. Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum and the Museum of Natural History.

Visitors can expect hands on activities and exhibits across all three locations, with docents available to guide people of all ages.

Among the featured displays, the planetarium will showcase a new robot and offer solar scope viewing. The Keck museum will highlight a 295 million year old shark jaw fossil, while the natural history museum will feature thousands of specimens of native plants and animals.

Planetarium dome shows will also be available at a reduced cost of $10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Parking on campus will be free in spaces that are not marked with a 24,7 reserved sign.

The event also comes just ahead of a temporary closure. Planetarium Director Paul McFarlane said the timing gives the community a final opportunity to visit before renovations begin the first week of May.

“Now’s your chance to see the Planetarium exhibits for free before we undergo some exciting changes,” McFarlane said.

The University of Nevada, Reno says the event is part of its Earth Month celebration, aimed at connecting the community with science through interactive learning.
