The Carson City Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is offering a free Basic Training Academy in September 2025 and is currently accepting applications from people interested in volunteering.
Those interested can contact CERT via email at cert@carson.org to request an application.
Completed applications must be submitted to the same email address no later than Wednesday, September 3, to be considered for a spot in the academy.
With limited seats available, applicants are encouraged to apply early.
The academy will provide 26 hours of classroom instruction over six sessions, which will take place from September 18-20 and September 25-27.
Training will occur on Thursday and Friday evenings, along with all-day sessions on Saturdays.
Participants will conclude the academy with a practical demonstration of the skills learned.
All sessions must be attended to graduate, and the location of the training will be provided to accepted applicants.
CERT is a nationwide volunteer program that prepares local communities for emergencies and supports first responders during incidents.
The Basic Training Academy covers several areas, including disaster preparedness, fire safety, utility control, disaster medical operations, disaster psychology, light search and rescue, and terrorism awareness.
Although the academy is based in Carson City, people from outside the area are welcome to participate. No previous experience or special skills are necessary. Children aged 16 and 17 can attend with signed parental consent.
Graduates of the CERT Basic Training Academy will be strongly encouraged to stay active in the Carson City CERT by attending monthly training meetings, participating in additional exercises, distributing preparedness materials during public events, and supporting first responders in emergencies.
