Critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop across portions of western Nevada and far northeastern California beginning Friday, prompting forecasters to issue a Red Flag Warning for the Sierra Front.

The National Weather Service in Reno upgraded an earlier Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning that will be in effect from 11 a.m. Friday through 11 p.m. Saturday.

The warning covers Carson City, Douglas County, Storey County, southern Washoe County, western Lyon County and far southern Lassen County, where forecasters expect a combination of strong winds and low humidity to create dangerous fire weather conditions.

Forecasters said west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected during the warning period. Afternoon humidity levels are forecast to drop between 12% and 20%.

The most critical conditions are expected to last two to four hours on Friday and three to eight hours on

Saturday. While humidity is expected to recover Friday night, breezy conditions are forecast to continue on midslopes and ridges.

According to the National Weather Service, the combination of strong winds and low humidity could allow fires to grow rapidly in size and intensity before first responders are able to contain them, particularly from any recent lightning holdover fires.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities that could create sparks near dry vegetation, including yard work, target shooting, and campfires.

People are also encouraged to follow local fire restrictions and monitor updated forecasts and preparedness information.
