As South Lake Tahoe marks the anniversary of one of its most destructive wildfires, fire officials are urging people to take steps now to reduce wildfire risk as dangerous conditions return to the region.
Today, according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue in an online post, marks the anniversary of the Angora Fire, which began June 24, 2007, and left a lasting impact on the South Lake Tahoe community.
The anniversary is a time to remember the resilience of those affected, the homes that were lost, the lives that were changed, and the community's recovery efforts following the fire, the agency said.
The reminder comes as a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Sierra Front because of severe fire danger tied to high temperatures. Severe fire restrictions have also been issued at various state and local levels throughout both Nevada and California.
While South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue shared the reminder, the message is relevant for people throughout Northern Nevada and California as elevated fire danger and fire restrictions continue across the region.
Fire officials encouraged people to take steps to reduce wildfire risk and remain prepared throughout fire season. The agency said now is the time to create defensible space and focus on home hardening efforts.
