Donner Summit April 22, 2026

A wintry storm prompted chain controls on some mountain highways including I-80 over Donner Summit.

Drivers should be prepared for weather changes and impacts to travel.

In the Tahoe Basin, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon. Heavy snow above 6,500 feet is expected, with 4 to 10 inches common at mid elevations and up to 18 inches on higher peaks. Lake level snowfall of 1 to 4 inches is possible, with the highest amounts on the western shores.

Gusty winds up to 35 mph at lake level and ridgetop gusts up to 90 mph are also expected.

Wednesday turns partly cloudy with highs in the mid 50’s, followed by a warming and drying trend through the end of the week with highs climbing into the 60s by Friday.
