The holiday shopping season officially starts this week. After Black Friday we have Small Business Saturday, a day when you're encouraged to support local shops.
The MidTown Marketplace in Carson City features more than 30 different businesses under one roof. It's open year-round, but this is always a special time of year.
"It's out busiest time of the year," said Coleen Cudney, MidTown Marketplace co-owner. "You're going to find all your décor for Christmas, your serving dishes, those special gifts for people, you're going to find it all here."
There are all kinds of vendors with different specialties here.
"My husband works with metal and wood to make beautiful things, and then I repurpose furniture," said Thea Acquistapace, owner of Original 36. "During the holidays this place turns into a winter wonderland."
It's a chance to find that one-of-a-kind item.
"I make baby stuff," said Sherrie Poncsak, owner of slugnladybugs. "I started a few years ago with my granddaughter because we couldn't find any cute outfits, so I ended up making outfits and it's bloomed into doggie blankets, human blankets, onesies, tutus, you name it, I make it."
Here, it's all about collaboration and catering to the customer.
"The vendors work really hard to keep their prices reasonable so when people come its not a hmm, should I buy it," said Robin Collum, who specializes in home décor. "They buy it because it's a great deal and a beautiful item."
There's a different theme here every month, and all kinds of workshops for those feeling crafty.
"We do DIY classes," said Christine Latshaw, co-owner of the MidTown Marketplace. "We can teach you how to paint furniture, upcycle it, we can also do needle felting, learning how to make a snowman out of a table leg, stamps, all sorts of things."
It's a community space where makers have a place to shine.
"I came here on a ladies night just as a first-time person, and within half an hour I said, 'you know what, I have to be here,'" said Sue Hasseler, who now has a space here. "This is what I've been looking for since I moved to Carson City; a place like this that I could come and be a part of and I'm really grateful to be here."
