Crime and calls for service in downtown Reno are significantly lower in part due to a new policing initiative.

That's according to a presentation given to the Reno City Council by Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance on Wednesday.

In September 2023, the Reno Police Department launched a data-driven initiative aimed at improving crime and blight in downtown. The Directed Engagement, Enforcement, and Deployment Strategy (DEEDS) program has been in operation for six months.

Chief Nance shared some program statistics from September 2023-March 2024 compared to the same period a year earlier:

* 12.43% decrease in citizen-initiated calls for service

* 55% decrease in vehicle versus pedestrian crashes

* 29% decrease in commercial burglaries

* 25% in vehicle burglaries

Chief Nance said this decrease in incidents and calls for service is a direct result of the DEEDS initiative. Since September, the Reno Police Department conducted the following operations in downtown:

* 18 Encampment Cleanups

* Three Warrant Sweeps

* 992 Graffiti Abatements

* 1,189 Arrests

DEEDS is data-driven and guided by three goals: provide a safe environment for visitors and residents, create sustainable practices to reduce blight, crime, and calls for service and engage the entire police department, community, and other city departments in the reduction of crime and blight.
