Target shooting is a leading cause of wildfires in the region, especially with the high winds and dry climate.

And it doesn't only pose a fire risk.

Stray bullets can be dangerous to bystanders in the area.

First responders say that this isn't a matter of the second amendment, it's a matter of public safety.

"Stray bullets are always a concern. In fact, we've seen target shooting near some of our elementary schools. That really creates an abundance of concern for us as first responders because those stray bullets could easily injure or kill an innocent bystander," says Adam Mayberry, Communication Officer for Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue.

Target shooting also brings along a huge fire risk.

The Jasper Fire of 2019 was started by target shooting at a hill with much vegetation.

Mayberry says that when target shooting, you want to shoot at the side of a hill where there is no brush or vegetation.

He also added that you should have fire stopping equipment with you such as an extinguisher, water, and a shovel.

Mayberry says on hot, dry, windy days he strongly encourages residents not to engage in any activities that start fires.

That includes target shooting.
