On October 24th, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada held their annual 'Baggin' for Apples' event where they let the younger generation come in and learn about volunteer work.Â
Usually you have to be at least ten years old but tonight they let everyone participate.
The Food Bank also makes it fun by letting everyone wear a costume for the spooky season.
All the apples bagged will go out for distribution while the kids and their families get to play games and enjoy refreshments for volunteering.
Jocelyn Lantrip, the Director of Marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada says "We do have the kids sorting through the apples and sometimes they are bad, so we have them put them in the bad apple cart... and usually those will end up going to a pig farm and we try to use everything that we can, we hate to waste food here at the food bank."
Like Lantrip mentioned... everything is used in another way if the food isn't distributed through the food bank.
Lantrip tells us the community is used to seeing perfect produce and typically won't buy produce that is imperfect. But during this event they teach the kids that even imperfect food can be edible.
She adds "We have thousands of pounds of apples in this facility right now and the truth is we need a lot of food to come through here we're still helping about 155,000 people every single month so the numbers are high we have a lot to do and we do a lot of that through volunteering."
Lantrip says the need in the community facing food insecurity has never been higher, and getting new volunteers into the Food Bank to help out is always important.
She mentions "The shocking thing about this event, we thought it would be the children and even their parents might be a little more interested in the games and in the refreshments and that part of the event... but they're not! They're very focused on the work."
Lantrip also told us many people in the community may not be aware of how much fresh produce the Food Bank provides...
"A lot of people don't know that because they're used to giving a can or a box of cereal at a food drive but we actually do source a lot of fresh produce and this is a real task."
If you missed the all ages volunteer event tonight you can catch the next one in January for MLK National Day of Service. Or if you would like to volunteer a few hours and make a big difference you can link the link here.
