With the winter months arriving and cold air creeping into the area, it can be hard to keep your home warm.

Sierra Air says the summer months are more expensive because you're running your compressor or air conditioning, which draws the most electricity out of your home.

However, they also say your furnace likely has natural gas, which is the bill that goes up in the wintertime.

But there are some things you can do to help keep costs down.

Jason Downing, the Operations Manager at Sierra Air, says, "Some of the biggest things you can do as a homeowner, obviously, change your filter. A dirty filter is not only going to cause your system to not operate, but it will also cause it to be inefficient. One of the biggest things we do here, too, is heating and cooling, is all about infiltration, so we're trying to keep infiltration of cold air from entering the house or the heat from escaping the house."

Downing mentions that one of the best ways to keep cold air from coming into your home is insulation on your windows.

He says most people have an 80% furnace, but they go all the way up to 90% now. That means you're either getting 80 cents on the dollar or 90 cents on the dollar for heating.

"Most people are going to want to get on a maintenance program where we come out twice a year to come look at the AC and come out to look at the furnace. We do include a filter change on that visit, so you don't have to worry about that, but the other thing we're going to do is clean everything out, make sure everything is operational, check for gas pressure, check for carbon monoxide, and make sure it's safe to run."
