A 9-month-old child is recovering in a Reno hospital after being exposed to multiple controlled substances, according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded early Saturday morning to Renown Regional Medical Center after the child tested positive for methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.

Medical staff performed CPR and admitted the infant to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where the child remains under close medical supervision. The exact condition of the baby is currently unknown.

During the investigation, deputies interviewed both parents. The child's father, Dwayne Turner, reportedly fled the hospital when approached by medical staff but later returned and spoke with detectives.

Deputies recovered controlled substances and drug paraphernalia in connection with the case.

Turner was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on charges of child abuse and neglect, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to register as a convicted person.

“This is an incredibly tragic and disturbing situation. No child should ever be exposed to such dangers. We are grateful to the medical team at Renown and our deputies for their quick action to ensure this infant is safe and receiving the care they need. Our focus remains on protecting the most vulnerable members of our community, and we will work closely with our partners to ensure accountability and support for this child,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam.

The case remains under investigation. Washoe County Child Protective Services is involved, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Non-Emergency Dispatch at 775-785-9276 or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900, referencing case # WC25-4770.
