The Carson City Senior Center will celebrate 50 years of service with a community open house featuring entertainment, food, history, and activities for residents of all ages.
The free event open to the public is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive in Carson City.
The celebration will begin with a sparkling cider toast honoring the center’s 50-year milestone. Guests will have the opportunity to hear live music from the Capital City Strummers, play bingo and attend local history presentations by David and Gayle Woodruff.
Visitors also can tour the center and learn more about its programs and services.
Complimentary pizza, ice cream and soda will be available while supplies last. The event will also include raffle prizes, swag bags and other activities.
The center’s history began with a community effort to create a place focused on enriching the lives of local seniors. Through a partnership with the Carson City Kiwanis Club, volunteers rescued buildings that were scheduled for demolition and moved and combined them on a vacant lot at Roop and Beverly streets.
The original Senior Center included activity rooms, a dining hall and a daily meal program that provided 65 meals, including 60 served on-site and five delivered.
The center has since grown into a 33,000-square-foot campus with a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, a large dining area and recreational spaces. The daily lunch program now serves 200 meals on-site and delivers an additional 320 meals to homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels.
"This milestone is a celebration of the people, volunteers, staff, and community partners who have helped make the Carson City Senior Center a place of friendship, support, and connection for the past 50 years," said Courtney Warner, Senior Center Director.
