Sideshows and illegal street racing became a big issue in our area over the past few summers.

So far this year, the Sparks Police Department says there has been much less activity than before.

They credit their zero-tolerance approach for the decline.

"If we don't catch you that night, we will still continue to do follow up and we may be knocking at your door, you know, the next day or even in the weeks after, because like I said, we do receive tips, we do receive videos, and we do follow up on these incidents," said Sergeant Shawn Congdon, Traffic Division, Sparks Police Department.

Sergeant Congdon also says that extra officers are out on the weekends actively looking for sideshows.

They also work closely with the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office to crack down on this issue.

Because sideshows are so dangerous, drivers are not the only people who will get into trouble at these events.

"Just stay at home, don't spectate at these events, because you will get caught up in these events and you will face a misdemeanor crime as well as having to go in front of a judge," said Sergeant Congdon.

Sergeant Congdon emphasized how helpful the public has been in tracking these events.

He and the rest of the police agencies in our area encourage people to contact the police if they see or hear a sideshow going on.
