Scam Alert

The Elko Police Department is warning people about banking scams in the local community.

These scams are started by sending a text message, which follows with a phone call. These scammers sound professional, using terminology that is convincing to the person of interest.

According to the police, "[You should] trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. Many victims report sensing something was wrong but talked themselves out of it."

If you receive this suspected scam, hang up and call your bank directly using the number on your debit or credit card, bank statement, or the bank’s official website.

You should not click on links or respond to unexpected texts or emails claiming to be from your bank.

Officials recommend to never share passwords, verification codes, or personal information over the phone, by text, or by email.

Family members should also be having discussions, especially seniors, who are often targeted by fraudsters.

If you believe you have been the victim of a similar scam, please contact the Elko Police Department at (775) 777-7310.
