Reno Public Market last-minute shopping - Photo

"Deck the Halls" at Reno Public Market brought community dancing and local vendors to shop at. One family said they originally stopped by to start a holiday tradition.

People shopped last-minute at the Reno Public Market for the holidays.

"There are free pictures here with Santa, so we wanted to bring my son and take some pictures, for Christmas," said Steve Davshwar.

Now, they're eyeing the perfect gift for grandma.

"We think maybe a necklace, or something, would be perfect," Davshwar said.

But much like everything else, gifts have gotten more expensive as of late.

Davshwar's girlfriend, Hayley Price, said it's especially impacted their clothes shopping.

"You would think tiny things are going to be cheaper," Price said. "No! They're like the same prices as adult stuff."

Another family says they're taking a more modest approach to gift-giving this year.

"I've been writing heartfelt cards, things like that, rather than actual gifts," said Kadie Remaklus.

Davshwar said they've bought toys for his son Avi at secondhand stores to get around the rising prices.

"[We] go to Goodwill to get him some used toys and stuff," he said, "instead of going on Amazon to get something new because he's only going to use it for like a little bit and then grow out of it."

He said Dollar Tree has been their go-to destination for decorations.

Remaklus says events like this one let her support the local community while still sharing the Christmas spirit.

She said she's prioritizing "gifts that can come from the heart and also give back to the community instead of going to big stores and dumping money there."
