For the first time, we set a community-wide goal for Share Your Christmas of one million meals, and our community delivered.

"1.1 million meals raised in 12 hours," said Aramelle Wheeler, Marketing & Communication Director, Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN).

As a result, FBNN is now looking for volunteers to help sort all of that food, especially after the holiday season.

"Come January, we tend to see a little bit of a decline in the folks that are looking to come out," Wheeler said.

In total, we raised 150,358 pounds of food and $334,494.03 in cash donations.

That puts us about a thousand pounds short of last year's total of 151,196 lbs. of food, but cash donations went up almost $20,000 compared to $318,871.23 collected one year ago.

"We are really able to stretch that dollar," Wheeler said, "so being able to say we saw monetary donations grow is very important for us right now.

If we break down the totals by location, we collected 86,241 pounds of food and $230,832.96 at the Grand Sierra Resort alone. Minden also showed out, contributing 41,165 lbs. and $92,474.07 at the Carson Valley Inn. The Raley's in Fernley took in 4.469 lbs. and $4,484 of donations.

The Carson City community gave 18,033 pounds of non-perishables and $6,700. Three charities combined for these totals. Advocates to End Domestic Violence collected 1,724 lbs. and $2,773, while Friends in Service Helping (or FISH) gathered 5,457 lbs. and $2,210. The Ron Wood Resource Center took in 5,051 lbs. and $1,720.

FBNN says they serve over 160,000 people every month, so Friday's donations will help them get through the next few months.

"All of the donations that we received here at the Food Bank will go into helping us be ready as we head into the new year and towards the spring," Wheeler said.

FBNN will distribute some of the donations they received at the GSR to partner agencies across the region. Wheeler says food and money donated at our smaller locations will stay right where it is.

"If you're giving in Fernley, you're helping Fernley families," she said. "The same is true in Carson City and Minden. It's really wonderful."

While the Food Bank will always take donations, Wheeler says the number one thing they need right now is volunteers. If you want to volunteer, click here for more information.
