Beginning May 1, as part of Wildfire Awareness Month, more than 200 Spanish goats from High Desert Grazing are being used to help reduce wildfire dangers in the Somersett community.
The goats will clear approximately 20 acres of vegetation above Somersett in the area between Pepperwood Court, Mountain Spirit Trail, and Peavine Valley Road.
These goats, aged one to three years, are bred and suited for diverse terrain and consume both live and dead vegetation, making them more effective than sheep for fire fuel reduction.
Their grazing complements other mitigation efforts such as mechanical mastication and hand trimming across the Somersett and Del Webb areas.
The site is enclosed with electric fencing and protected by guard dogs.
While public visits to monitor the progress are permitted, visitors must leash their pets, stay at a distance, and avoid loud noises to prevent disturbing or scaring of the goats.
