Donner Party Park hosted a special bird-box building and painting day on Saturday.

The event is part of the City of Reno's 'Love Your Block' mini-grant program.

"The whole purpose of this grant is to bring neighborhoods together, have neighbors apply for grants for things that they want to see in their neighborhood. This neighborhood in particular has a lot of youth and the residents here wanted to see activity, some activation for families and simultaneously do something good for wildlife," says Cori Fisher, Housing Manager, Housing and Neighborhood Development.

Almost 100 free birdhouses were given away for residents living near the park.

Some of the birdhouses will stay in the park and some will be donated to Donner Springs Elementary School.

Organizers say that since Nevada's desert mountains have few tall trees, birdhouses provide a much-needed home for local birds.
