A man was arrested in Sparks on Wednesday on charges related to an alleged 2016 sexual assault against an 11-year-old.

At the time the initial report was filed against a suspect identified as Lorenzo Mendoza, a months-long investigation was conducted by Sparks Police detectives, but they were unable to establish probable cause for an arrest, according to a release from the SPD.

In July 2024, new information related to the case came to light. Then, in November of 2024, new evidence was collected.

Detectives continued their investigation into Mendoza and obtained an arrest warrant this month.

On Wednesday, Mendoza was arrested by Sparks Police Detectives and booked into the Washoe County Jail.

He was charged with five counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 14, and one count of attempted sexual assault of a child under 14.
