On Saturday night, Safe Embrace held their annual Trees and Lights Gala.Â
The event works to spread awareness about domestic violence and sexual abuse in our community and getting people into a giving spirit to help those in need.
"Many people don't realize just how many people are affected by domestic violence in our area and its effects in all aspects. It can affect children at school, it can affect employees in their jobs - it's even deadly to some people," Cheryl Guinan, Member of the Board of Directors at Safe Embrace.
During the event, people were able to learn more about the work Safe Embrace does, meet others in the community, and also participate in an auction for trees, wreaths, and other items.
All of the funds raised go back into the community and help Safe Embrace with their emergency shelter and their emergency re-housing program.
For some attendees we spoke with, attending this event is important for them, because these issues hit close to home.
"I've had friends in this situation and trying to help them and seeing the struggle that they go through to remove themselves from those situations is extremely difficult with the connection they have with their abuser," said Salina Taylor.
For another member of Safe Embrace, seeing over 250 people attend tonight's event inspires her to continue working hard to help people in our community.
"It feels amazing, it feels like our message is being heard that you know our mission is being taken seriously and that a lot of people care," said Leslie Berg, Client Services Manager for Safe Embrace.
