As communities across the country recognize National Voter Registration Day today, the State of Nevada is encouraging high school seniors and other eligible voters to get registered and ready to vote in upcoming elections.
With more than 100,000 state and local elections scheduled nationwide this year, the push to ensure Nevadans are prepared at the ballot box aligns with a broader effort highlighted by information from NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org, the official site of the nonpartisan civic holiday.
In Nevada, one initiative supporting this effort is the Helen J. Stewart Award, which rewards high schools that register or pre-register at least 85 percent of eligible seniors to vote.
National Voter Registration Day, established in 2012, is the country’s largest single-day civic celebration.
More than 3,500 community partners nationwide are hosting events at schools, libraries, concerts, and other venues to help Americans register and prepare to vote ahead of more than 100,000 elections taking place this year, a higher number than in 2024. The initiative has helped over 6 million people register to vote.
“National Voter Registration Day is a celebration of our democracy and a reminder that every election matters, including the ones happening in our own backyards,” said Lucille Wenegieme, Executive Director of HeadCount, in remarks provided by NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org. “This civic holiday reminds us that participation can be a unifying force. At HeadCount, we see the power of music and culture to bring people together. Today we are channeling that energy into making sure everyone has the chance to use their voice and be part of shaping the future.”
While registering is the first step, organizers emphasize the importance of making a voting plan, knowing what’s on the ballot, and ensuring access to time off to vote when needed.
The campaign is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, the National Association of State Election Directors, and the National Association of Election Officials.
