The Nevada Department of Taxation is issuing an alert to business owners in the state regarding a scam that involves third parties trying to impersonate the department.
The third parties are attempting to impersonate the Department of Taxation in an effort to seize property.
Taxpayers in Clark County started receiving notices or letters claiming that their properties are subject to seizure due to unpaid taxes.
The communications often appear official, using legitimate-looking logos and jargon to make them sound credible.
In some cases, the scammers may call people directly to contact the business owners by phone to insist they act immediately.
The Nevada Department of Taxation has provided the following tips to help you be on the lookout for a scam:
- Be wary of unexpected letters or phone calls claiming urgent action is needed regarding your business property.
- Scammers often create a sense of urgency, pressuring individuals to act quickly without verifying the legitimacy of the claim.
- The Department will not ask for payment over the phone or via untraceable methods.
If you suspect that you may be part of a scam, contact the department to confirm the legitimacy of any claims - if you believe you've been targeted, report it to your local law enforcement and the Department of Taxation.
