Overnight lane reductions will begin Sunday on Interstate 80 between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway as the Nevada Department of Transportation conducts roadside litter removal and soil testing ahead of future roadway widening.

Single-lane closures will take place Sunday evenings through Friday mornings from Sept. 7 through December.

Westbound lanes will close between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., and eastbound lanes will close between 7:30 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Lane closures, which may be up to two miles long, will alternate in both directions of I-80 and at various interchanges throughout the corridor.

Drivers should plan for delays and allow extra travel time, especially when heading to or from the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and nearby areas.

The overnight schedule is designed to minimize impacts to daytime commute traffic, and NDOT notes the schedule is subject to change.

Two main tasks will be performed during the closures. NDOT crews will remove roadside litter and conduct preliminary geotechnical soil surveys in preparation for a future I-80 widening project between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway.

NDOT says traffic on this stretch of interstate has increased more than 70 percent in the past decade.

As early as 2027, NDOT plans to begin widening and improving the corridor. The soil surveys will provide data on the area's steep slopes and rock formations to help engineers finalize design plans. According to NDOT, the widening project is expected to reduce total crash rates by about 20 percent.

Five NDOT maintenance crews from across the region will work together on litter removal. The agency reminds drivers to secure all items in their vehicles, as uncovered trash and unsecured loads can lead to roadside litter. Drivers may be fined for unlawful littering.
