Pyramid Lake’s 2026-27 fishing season opens Thursday, Oct. 1, with anglers able to return to the lake after getting the required permits and following updated regulations.
According to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, seasonal permits are available for $750 through Sept. 30. Permits can also be purchased beginning Oct. 1 at the Ranger Station in Sutcliffe and the Pyramid Lake Museum and Visitor’s Center.
The tribe recently approved changes to its fishing regulations. Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles are not allowed on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation, and only guides and charters approved by the tribe may provide fishing services. Unauthorized guiding can result in a $5,000 fine.
Boaters have additional requirements. All motorized and trailered watercraft must receive a free Aquatic Invasive Species inspection before launching. The inspection station opens at 5:30 a.m. Oct. 1-4 and will open at 6 a.m. daily beginning Oct. 5.
Boaters should arrive with their watercraft clean, drained, and dry and keep their inspection paperwork and permits available. Decontamination fees are $15 for the first system and $5 for each additional system.
Several areas remain closed or restricted, including the eastern side of the lake and waters around Anaho Island, the Sutcliffe Spawn Channel, the Needles and Pyramid Beach. The Truckee River waters within the reservation are also closed, along with part of Pyramid Lake near the river’s mouth.
Boaters are reminded to have required safety equipment on board, including life jackets, emergency lights, fire extinguishers, and signaling devices. Boaters must leave the lake when white caps are present.
Pyramid Lake Fisheries is also moving to an online creel survey system. Anglers who complete a daily survey will receive an entry into a monthly drawing for a free seasonal fishing permit.
For opening day, the I-80 Smokeshop, Nixon Store and Marina will open at 5 a.m. with free doughnuts and coffee.
