Pyramid Lake Algae Bloom

The Pyramid Lake Natural Resources Department says Pyramid Lake is currently experiencing an annual algae bloom.

This is a natural phenomenon that occurs almost every year around this time, according to the group.

The algae may rise to the top of the water and form a surface scum of foam.

The algae is capable of producing several types of toxins, including liver, nerve and dermal toxins. These toxins can be harmful to humans, pets and wildlife.

Visitors are asked to check water conditions before setting up day-use or camp sites. Beaches may close in the future to protect public health.

Recommended recreation tips:

-Avoid or minimize contact with water showing signs of heavy bloom conditions

-Towel dry and rinse off with fresh water after swimming

-Avoid allowing pets to directly come into contact with water during the bloom, including swallowing water

-Pay attention to beach advisory signs

Any person or pet that becomes ill after water contact is advised to seek medical or veterinary attention.
